The New Advantage: Design Judgement
Design judgment, knowing what to build, what to skip, and what a system should never do, has always been the real work. AI just made it more visible.

From where I sit, the most valuable designer in a GenUI world isn't the one who builds components. It's the one who can write the design constitution.
AI-generated interfaces need constraints. They need a set of principles specific enough to produce good decisions across thousands of contexts that nobody can anticipate in advance. Not a vague brand guide. Not "be accessible." A structured, reasoned, layered set of decision rules: here's what we prioritize when we're in conflict, here's what we never do regardless of context, here's how we measure speed vs. comprehension for this user type.
That document, call it a design spec, a design system, a constitution, is the intellectual product that matters now. Writing it requires the kind of deep judgment most designers have never been asked to externalize.
When a designer can't articulate why something is right, they can still execute it. They can feel their way to a good outcome. That works when humans implement the design. It doesn't work when the system needs a rule it can apply at inference time.
Where most designers are right now
I watch a lot of designers respond to AI by getting better at prompting. Using Copilot more fluently. Generating faster comps. Those are real skills.
But it's optimization on the wrong dimension. It's the equivalent of a stock photographer getting better at lighting in 2008. Still useful. Not the move that changes your trajectory.
The designers doubling down on execution fluency are betting that being faster at the old thing protects them. It doesn't. It just delays the reckoning by a year or two.
What would the right move look like? Getting serious about the practice of articulating judgment. Writing down why things work. Building design frameworks specific enough to be actionable. Developing opinions strong enough to defend. Getting comfortable with the question "why is this right?" having an answer that isn't "it feels right" or "that's just good UX."
That sounds like table stakes. It's not. Ask a room full of designers to explain why an error message belongs inline versus in a toast notification. Most of them will give you an answer that only works if the other person already agrees with them. They'll describe the output, not the reasoning.
The opportunity
This isn't a eulogy. The designer's job got more important.
AI can generate interfaces. It cannot generate design judgment. It can't originate the principles it needs to operate well. It can recombine patterns it's seen before, and it will approximate something passable most of the time. But passable isn't the standard.
The gap between AI-generated-interface-that-works and AI-generated-interface-that-actually-serves-the-user is design judgment. That gap is where the value lives. It's growing, not shrinking, as GenUI becomes more widespread and the interfaces become more complex.
The designers who understand this are going to be worth a lot. Not because they're faster. Because they can encode something the model can't generate on its own.
The ones still optimizing for execution speed are competing with a system that doesn't sleep, doesn't iterate slowly, and doesn't charge hourly. Most design organizations haven't asked yet whether they're building toward that gap or away from it.
Build toward that gap.
